Are AI-Built Websites Actually Better Than Websites Built by Developers?

I build every client website with Claude Code, an AI coding tool, so I'm not going to tell you AI-built sites are inherently worse. I'm also not going to tell you they're inherently better, because that framing misses the point. AI changes how a website gets built. It doesn't change who's accountable for whether the published website is actually any good.

The real question isn't AI versus human

A website built with AI by someone who understands code, hosting, accessibility and SEO is a completely different product from one built by someone typing prompts into a builder and publishing whatever comes back. Both are technically "AI-built". The difference is whether there's a person in the loop who can tell when the output is wrong, and knows how to fix it.

What AI genuinely speeds up

The wins are real. Boilerplate that used to take an afternoon (page templates, form handling, navigation, responsive layouts) now takes minutes. Iteration is faster too, so trying three different homepage layouts is a quick conversation rather than a day of rework. That speed is a big part of why a freelancer can now deliver work that used to need a small team, at freelance rather than agency prices.

Where it still needs supervision

AI is very good at producing code that looks finished. It's less reliable at the things you can't see on the screen. In my own work, these are the areas I check most carefully:

  • Security, especially anything touching forms, logins or customer data

  • Accessibility, such as missing alt text, weak colour contrast or menus that don't work with a keyboard

  • Performance, like unoptimised images or scripts that hold the page up while it loads

  • Genuinely custom problems, where the AI confidently suggests a common pattern that doesn't actually fit your business

None of these are rare edge cases. They're the everyday gap between a site that demos well and one that holds up once real people start using it.

Why "developer using AI" beats both alternatives

A developer not using AI can still produce excellent work, it just takes longer and usually costs more. No developer at all, just AI, gets you something fast and cheap that nobody can properly maintain or vouch for. A developer using AI well gets most of the speed without giving up the judgement, and that's the combination I'd recommend to almost any small business right now.

What I'd actually ask whoever builds your site

Don't ask whether they use AI, because sooner or later most will in some form. Ask how they check what it produces. Do they test on real phones? Do they run accessibility and performance checks before launch? Could they explain what's in the code if something breaks a year from now? Clear answers to those tell you far more than any label.

If you're weighing up your options and want a straight answer on what your project actually needs, get in touch and I'll tell you honestly, including when something simpler would do the job.

A quick note: this is my own opinion, based on what I've seen work in practice, not formal legal, financial or professional advice — your situation may differ, so do your own research before making a decision. These views are mine alone and don't reflect any employer or organisation I'm affiliated with.

Frequently asked questions

Is a website built with AI bad for SEO?

Not inherently. Search engines care about speed, structure, content quality and technical correctness, not which tool wrote the code. The problems come from unreviewed output, such as missing meta descriptions, muddled headings or oversized images, which a developer checking the work should catch before launch.

Are AI-built websites cheaper?

Often, because AI cuts the time spent on repetitive work. Freelance website builds in the UK typically run from £500 to £4,000+ depending on scope, and a developer using AI well can usually deliver more within that range. The cheapest route, an unreviewed site from a builder, can end up costing more once problems need fixing.

Can I build my own website with AI and skip the developer?

For a simple personal page or testing an idea, yes. For a business site with contact forms, bookings, payments or customer data, you want someone who can review security, accessibility and performance before it goes live, because those are the areas AI is most likely to get quietly wrong.

How do I know if a developer is using AI responsibly?

Ask how they check what it produces. A good answer covers testing on real devices, accessibility and performance checks before launch, and being able to explain what's in the code if something needs changing later. Vague answers are a bigger warning sign than whether they use AI at all.
