Tools & technology
- Next.jsNext.js is a toolkit for building websites that load quickly and are easy for Google to read.
- ReactReact is the code library that builds the site's screens from small, reusable pieces, so everything responds instantly when you click.
- TypeScriptTypeScript is JavaScript with built-in checks, so mistakes are caught while the site is being built rather than by visitors.
- Tailwind CSSTailwind CSS is a styling toolkit that keeps the design consistent and the site light and fast.
- SupabaseSupabase is the online database behind the site, where content, pages and enquiries are stored securely.
- VercelVercel is the hosting service that publishes the site and delivers it quickly to visitors around the world.
- GitHubGitHub keeps every version of the site's code, so changes are tracked and can be rolled back if something goes wrong.
- ClaudeClaude is an AI assistant that helps write, review and test the site's code.
The project
Project overview
Whistles Laser Clinic is a laser clinic on Brockley Rise in Forest Hill, South London, where every treatment is carried out one-to-one by the clinic's senior technician. I built its first website in 2021 as part of the clinic's launch, together with a bespoke logo, marketing materials, and the domain, hosting and email setup.
By 2026 the WordPress site was holding the clinic back. WordPress limited what the site could do, pages were slow to load, and the plugins behind it were out of date, which raised security concerns. I rebuilt it on Next.js, hosted on Vercel.
The new site is organised around a free consultation, the first thing a new client needs. It explains the three treatments: laser hair removal, vascular and thread vein removal, and laser facials. A six-step consultation journey shows what happens from first enquiry to first treatment, and course prices are listed up front. Before-and-after sliders, which the first site also had, can now be filtered by treatment area. Reviews, FAQs and a contact page with opening hours, a WhatsApp link and an enquiry form complete the site.
