The short answer
For small businesses in London and Hertfordshire, my websites start at £500 for a simple brochure site. Every project after that is priced on its own needs, because no two businesses want quite the same thing.
What affects the price
The more your site has to do, the more it costs. The main things that push the price up are an online shop or payments, connections to other systems you use, a custom editing area, and setting up your hosting, domain and business email.
As a guide, one recent client paid £1,850 for a site with online payments, a fully custom CMS, branded emails and a setup for following up with customers by email and SMS.
Ongoing costs
You pay for hosting and your domain directly to the provider, and I'll recommend a few I trust. I also recommend maintenance, from £150 a year, which covers backups, security updates, bug fixes and a few small changes. You can opt out, but then there's no support if the site goes down or breaks, and fixing it later costs more.

Don’t compare quotes based on price alone. Look at what’s included, the designer’s previous work, how bespoke the design is and what happens after launch. Also consider whether the website can grow with your business. Can you easily add pages and functionality through the CMS, or are you tied into a long-term contract or platform? A cheaper website can become expensive if you’re locked into something that limits you later.
